Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Incidental teaching is appropriate for
what ages?
A: Incidental teaching was developed in preschool classrooms and has
been most often applied in early childhood settings. However, the basic
concept of structuring learning objectives around everyday activities
can be modified and applied to learners at any age
Q: Who can implement incidental teaching?
A: Anyone. It does not require intensive training, although having a
background in education helps.
Q: Can I adapt incidental teaching to take
place in a discrete trial format?
A: Only if you follow the prescribed steps and teaching takes place
in a natural setting. Incidental teaching should not be done sitting
face-to-face at a table unless that is the typical setting for the activity
(e.g., snack time).
