Are there benefits in homework for ASD Students?

Forum References FAQ's Quiz Lecture Introduction When homework is designed with consideration given to the special needs of students with ASD it can provide academic, social and self-management benefits (Indiana Resource Center for Autism, 2000)

Academically, homework provides students the opportunity to complete unfinished assignments, review material, study, and practice skills. It also provides time for previewing new material or content before it is introduced in class. Reading basic facts or background information beforehand can help the student be more focused and keep pace with the instruction.

Academic performance affects a student’s emotional, social and behavioral well- being. If a student is better prepared academically it can mean reduced anxiety, an increase in class participation and improved self-esteem. Many of our students struggle with being different. How much better might they feel if they hand in an assignment with their peers, can follow along with the instruction, and more comfortably participate in a class discussion or activity.

Most importantly, students with ASD need many opportunities to be taught, learn, and apply skills they will need throughout their lives. Self-management and organizational skills are two such areas. Homework can provide opportunities for developing good work habits such as organizing work, following a schedule, and completing work in a timely manner. Teaching a student how to ask for assistance and developing a sense of responsibility are also skills that can be taught and reinforced through homework.
