SOCCSS: Introduction
SOCCSS for social skills! SOCCSS (Situation, Options, Consequences, Choices, Strategies, Simulation) is a teaching strategy designed to help students analyze and understand social communication and social interactions (Roosa, personal communication). This problem-solving and decision-making technique allows a student to reflect on a problem or situation, offer alternative options and strategies, identify consequences and choose an appropriate course of action. The goal of SOCCSS is to help students function better in social situations. The SOCCSS strategy provides you with a step-by-step process for helping students build the skills needed for social competence. Lecture content
Remember... Social skills do not come naturally to many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but they can be taught. There are many social skills strategies to choose from. When selecting a strategy, be sure it's the right one for the child, her level of development, and the situation. One size does not fit all |
