Peer-Mediated Instruction and Interventions
As many parents and educators know, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have much to offer to their peers, but they often have great difficulty with social skills and interactions. What comes naturally to their typically developing classmates, such as turn-taking, sharing, conversing, understanding social subtleties, knowing what is appropriate or cool, must often be directly taught to students with ASD. Teachers are challenged with finding ways to teach all of their students. To maximize available instructional time, many teachers have used peer teaching and have found it to be beneficial to the entire class. This module will look at ways in which peers can assist with the academic and social growth of students with ASD.
