Transition Strategies between Activities: Introduction

Forum References FAQ's Quiz Lecture Introduction Welcome!

This topic is designed to help parents, teachers, family members and paraprofessionals understand how to help children move more smoothly from one activity to another. This process is called a transition. When you think of transition, consider the following:

Does your child:

  • Have difficulty stopping an activity?
  • Have difficulty approaching a new activity?
  • Have difficulty moving from place to place?
  • Have difficulty starting an activity that he/she doesn’t like?

Many strategies may be used to help a child transition smoothly. The following lecture is designed to offer some tips and tools for planning effective transitions. Keep in mind that you may need to use more than one tool or idea to address children's transition needs.

Lecture Content

  1. Principle #1 - Preparation
  2. Principle #2 - Routine
  3. Principle #3 - Reminders
  4. Principle #4 - Reassurance that the activity is not gone forever
  5. Principle #5 - Expectation

Note: These principles typically are not used in isolation. Effective transition may contain some or all of these ideas. Some children need all four items addressed every day. Others may only need assistance when there is a change of schedule or when they are having a bad day.
