All children benefit from structure and
routine in their lives, but it may be especially beneficial for students
with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), who often have trouble with organizational
skills, regardless of their intelligence or their age. These students
seem to have either the neatest or the messiest desks or lockers. Some
of these students may also be very insistent on sameness and may become
very upset when someone or something alters their environment or their
routine in some way. Several strategies may be developed for these
individuals to help them deal with changes in rules or routines.
