Frequently Asked Questions

Forum References FAQ's Quiz Lecture Introduction Q. How can I find a music therapist?

A. Contact American Music Therapy Association, Ind., 8455 Colesvile Road, Suite 1000, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. Or check their website www.musictherapy.org for a music therapist in your area.

Q. What if there are no music therapists in my area?

A. There are several resources available with a variety of ideas and activities that can help you use music with your child.

Q. How will I know if using music with my child is working?

A. Careful observation of your child’s behavior will let you know if your child is responding the way you would like. Have fun with music and don’t be afraid to try a variety of music activities. Your child will let you know what they like.

Q. What if you don’t play an instrument and can’t sing very well?

A. It’s O.K., remember you are not teaching music skills; you are using music to teach other skills the child needs to learn. If you can’t play an instrument, you can use a maraca or pat a drum. There are many simple songs that even the least musical of us can sing. The important part is having fun together.

Q. How could music therapy benefit my child who doesn’t understand language very well and doesn’t talk?

A. Music is non-verbal. Even if a child does not talk, music can be used to establish early social, communication and movement skills.
