Q. The student I work with cannot sit in the chair and be quiet. Is DTI an appropriate program for him?

A. The student that you are concerned about would benefit from discrete trial instruction. The initial phase of teaching would involve instructional readiness training to help him learn how to get ready to learn other lessons.

Q. Would I want to use DTI with a student who is included, has language and also has academic skills?

A. If the student has the ability to learn independently you would probably not want to use DTI for his method of instruction.

Q. Can DTI be used with students of all ages or is it just for young students?

A. DTI is an appropriate teaching tool for anyone that needs to learn in small steps with repeated opportunities of the same information.

Q. After reading this module am I ready to implement a DTI program for a student?

A. No. You now have information about what a DTI program looks like. To implement a specific program the team should train and support each other with multiple practice sessions. Individual student needs should be identified. The focus of the program then becomes one of teaching and learning skills in a planned and organized manner with decisions for changes based on data collection.
