Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I use shaping for a student that cannot sit
in his seat?
A: Yes, the shaping technique may be used to reinforce
a student to sit in a chair. Reinforcement would occur each time the
student sat down
and increase as the student sat for longer periods of time.
Q: How does the shaping technique differ from the chaining
technique?
A: The technique of shaping identifies a desired behavior
and a current approximate behavior that the student demonstrates. The
team then
builds on that behavior by reinforcing close demonstrations of
the approximate
behavior until the desired behavior is achieved. The technique
of chaining also identifies a desired behavior but analyzes each
step
so that the
process moves consistently from one step to the other.
Q: If the shaping technique does not work, what should
I do?
A: Any process for changing behavior should include
a data collection method. The team should analyze the data and make
a
decision
about the success or lack of success of a program. If the
shaping
technique
is not successful, another look at the data would assist
the team in making decisions about how to change the current program
or
the need
to switch to another technique.
