The Peer Coaching Process: The Model and the Method
As mentioned, central to the process of peer coaching are the preobservation
conference, the observation, and the postobservation conference. In
this lecture participants learn the purpose of each, and the role of
the inviting and coaching partners throughout the peer coaching process.
Participants will be introduced to two critical tools of peer coaching:
the peer coaching log and the peer coaching self-report. Finally, peer
coaching scenarios will provide the opportunity for prospective peer
coaches to practice their skills.
The Preobservation Conference
Role of the Inviting Partner
- Share knowledge/language base with coach
- Describe goal of proposed activity
- Define coaching target in observable, measurable terms
- Negotiate data recording system to be used
- Establish mastery and maintenance criteria for own
performance
- Negotiate dates and times for observation and postobservation
conference
- Transfer above information to coaching log
- Describe observation etiquette for coach (i.e., where
to sit, how long to stay)
- Complete appropriate sections of self report
Role of the Coaching Partner
- Share knowledge/language base with inviting
partner
- Verify understanding through questioning
- Elicit mastery and maintenance criteria, if not provided
- Confirm data collection method
- Confirm dates and times for observation and postobservation
conference
- Clarify etiquette
- Summarize conference decisions
- Complete appropriate sections of self-report
The Observation
Role of the Inviting Partner
- Select place for coach to view target behavior
without disrupting the learning environment
- Prepare data collection form
- Take sample data from selected location in advance
- Prepare child/students/family for coach’s arrival
- Prepare plan to implement if child talks to coach
- Begin/end observation on time
- Do not talk to coach during observation
- Do not include coach in planned activity
- Signal coach to leave if problem arises
Role of the Coaching Partner
- Ensure that materials needed for data collection are
ready
- Arrive promptly and enter room quietly
- Move directly to the predetermined location
- Do not move from that area unless directed
- Do not talk to inviting partner during observation
- Keep conversation with child/students/family members
to a minimum during observation
- Leave promptly and quietly at end of observation,
or at any time if signaled by the inviting partner
- Complete data summary sections on coaching log
The Postobservation Conference
Role of the Inviting Partner
- Review data collected by coach
- Check yes/no for mastery criterion on coaching log
- Make self-evaluative statements based on data before
requesting advice from coach
- Determine action needed to improve self-performance;
record changes on coaching log under “future plans”
- Negotiate dates and times for next preconference (could
take place immediately) and observation
- Complete self-report
Role of the Coaching Partner
- Present data without evaluating the inviting partner’s
performance
- Using collaborative communication techniques, elicit
self-evaluative statements from inviting partner
- Prompt inviting partner to develop own solutions based
on data collected
- Offer advice only when/if invited, and only after
listening to partner’s self-reflection
- Verify dates and times for next preconference and
observation
- Transfer information to coaching log
- Complete self-report
Sample Open Questions for Eliciting Self-Evaluative
Statements in Peer Coaching
Preconference
- What are you trying to accomplish?
- Why do you think that is important?
- How will you know if your strategy worked?
- What do you want me to watch for?
- How will I know when to stop taking data?
Postconference
- What parts of the observation were you pleased
with?
- How did the actual activity compare with what you
had planned to do?
- What do you want to talk about first?
- Why do you think your criterion was/was not achieved?
- What makes you think that?
- I would like you to take a moment and reflect upon
something that happened …
- What were you thinking when you decided to …?
- What would you like to keep the same next time?
- From our discussion so far, which one thing would
you like to focus on with the time we have left?
