HOMEWORK: Introduction

Forum References FAQ's Quiz Lecture Introduction Welcome!

"Homework!!! The bane of every mother’s existence! The internationally recognized invader of peaceful evenings." These words were spoken by mothers’ of ASD children with ASD on a topic that has raised many questions, created controversy and is rarely addressed to everyone’s satisfaction. (Tulleman &and Lord, 2000).

Homework has traditionally been a basic component of the general education curriculum and considered an important ingredient in academic success. Research suggests it can be beneficial as long as teachers use their knowledge of developmental levels and students’ learning needs to guide policy and expectations. (Cooper, 1989). Research and practice also suggests that without modifications and adaptations in homework assignments students with ASD will most likely not be success in meeting this after school demands. In addition, lack of success in homework completion can have a negative impact on self-esteem as well as increased stress and anxiety students have little hope for success. (ERIC/OSEP, 2001).

This topic introduces you to information on how to analyze, address and hopefully resolve the homework dilemma for students with ASD.
